The Issue of Voluntourism and Orphanages

Recently I posted an opportunity that was uploaded from an organization in Kenya. The organization was looking for someone to: “Volunteer and Manage and Orphanage in Kenya”. This quickly resulted in a response from twitter saying: did you really mean mean this!! “#Volunteer to Manage an #Orphanage” @TrueTravellers http://t.co/SmFakg8OkD — better-volunteering (@bettrvolunteer) July 12, 2013 […]

Sustainable EcoTourism with a Dose of Adrenaline in British Columbia’s Rainforest

Hollywood screenwriters and literary legends have long relied on the mystery, adventure and magic a forest holds to tell their stories. And it’s no wonder after visiting the only aerial forest walkway in Canada: Greenheart Canopy at UBC Botanical Gardens. The weather is drizzly and grey – perfect conditions to meander through a coastal temperate […]

Voluntourism at TBEX – Travel Blogger Exchange

I attended my first TBEX conference in Toronto last weekend. For those who don’t know, TBEX is billed as “the world’s largest gathering of travel bloggers, writers, and new media content creators”. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect but I thought I would check it out. I’m really happy that I decided to go. […]

Elephant Care Volunteer in Nepal

Make a journey across and look at the things from renewed perspective. Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world with many environmental, social, and political problems. While there are 55,000 NGOs in Nepal, most people I speak to feel the majority of NGOs are too corrupt and use donated money for their […]

Top 5 Volunteer Abroad Resources

Recently,I have been trying to put together a site called volunteerafrica.net. The idea is to make a list of low fee volunteer opportunities in Africa. It’s only new, but hopefully it will become a useful resource. This led me to think that I haven’t seen a list of great low fee volunteer abroad resources. So, […]

Loco in Motion in Guatemala

“How many Guatemalans can fit on a bus?” A six-foot-two, blonde-haired guy asked me while we waited in line for the next bus to Guatemala City. “Um… I don’t know, how many?” I shrugged my backpack-laden shoulders and played along. “Just one more.” “That’s cute,” I laughed. “I’m serious,” he replied and pointed to the […]

Buenas Cosas is not Free, sorry…

Buenas Cosas thinks it can be done better The majority of programs that charge for volunteer participation are camouflaged for-profit, marketing/sales machines. While this sort of approach has realized lots of good things, Buenas Cosas thinks it can be done better. We think it’s time for a new, more credible/direct/honest/efficient approach to sustainable development. Yes, […]

Tornadoes – Storm Chasing in Saskatchewan

Last week, I had two opportunities to go storm chasing in Saskatchewan, Canada (my home stomping ground). This is something I have been interested in doing for a while, but not something I would do on my own as that just seems ridiculous.

Through the world of Facebook, I saw that a friend of a friend (who I also knew, but now very well) was a storm chaser. I randomly bumped into him and asked if I could tag along sometime. He said he would let me know when conditions were right and a few weeks later I was riding shotgun (well, mostly in the back seat) with Nick Schenher and photographer Chris Graham.

Living on the Edge of Africa

There I was: getting stuck in a mud pit with a three-metre long crocodile, being slapped in the face by an elephant’s trunk, tracking and hand feeding an adult cheetah, being charged by a hormonal rhinoceros, pursued by a lioness with a windowless truck as my only protection and, of course, the biggest challenge of […]

Hanoi: A Vietnamese introduction

There is, whichever way you look at it, a certain stereotype that hangs over the Vietnamese, an air of almost continued fascination. Obliterated by an indiscriminate US bombing campaign and then realigned with free market principles in the late eighties it is, in almost every way, bewildering to experience. Unlike the Chinese to the north […]

In South and Central America I found that it was very easy to find volunteering opportunities that did not cost anything. You may have to pay for the cost of having you volunteer […]
