Tell Us About Your Organization

Michael Judd founded Project Bona Fide in 2001 as an international non-profit supporting agro-ecology research. He has worked with agro-ecological systems and landscapes throughout the Americas for over 17 years, focusing on applying permaculture and ecological design to increase local food security and community health in tropical and temperate growing regions.

Today, Michael continues to raise awareness and funds for Bona Fide projects from the U.S. while focusing primarily on Ecologia LLC, a Maryland-based organization he founded that focuses on edible and ecological landscape design.

Vision

Provide people with the necessary knowledge and skills to empower them to produce their own food more sustainably and live more intentionally in their own environments.

Their approach has three key elements:

  1. Demonstrate the possible – Using permaculture and agroforestry research and design principles, conduct plant trials on-site and demonstrate successful models to the public.
  2. Learn from and educate the interested – Teach sustainable lifestyle principles to volunteers, interns, student groups, and local community members.
  3. Collaborate with the community – Support community projects through financial support, knowledge, and technical skills.

Who We Are

Project Bona Fide promotes food security and sustainable living systems on Isla de Ometepe, Nicaragua through permaculture design, agroforestry, research & education, and community collaboration. They educate and expose people locally and worldwide to the possibilities of multi-strata food production through demonstrative agriculture on our 26-acre model farm.

How Can People Help/Volunteer With You?

Their volunteer programs offer a unique opportunity for experiential learning. They allow you to get outside in a beautiful place, while eating well and working with a group of like-minded people seeking to make a difference in food security. Volunteers play an integral role in the upkeep of the farm, working to carry out seasonally appropriate tasks including weeding, building mulch piles, pruning trees, harvesting, construction, and much more. Every member of the farm is part of the on-site community here.
