Volunteer in New Delhi with street children

Name of the Project: Volunteer with street children for informal and creative education, livelihood training and sustainable living.

Project Highlights: This organisation focuses on street children living in New Delhi train station and surrounding areas. Approximately 600 children are supported through shelters, contact points and outreach services. This project also provides children with vocational and livelihood training once they have finished school. This is an excellent opportunity for volunteers to be closely involved with street children and to work towards restoring childhoods and creating sustainable futures.

Project Locations: Paharganj, Multani Dhanda, Tis Hazari and Gurgaon

State: Delhi

Project Duration: Ongoing

Language Preference: English and Hindi

Experience required (If any): Previous teaching, child care work or creative knowledge advantageous

Attributes/Qualities Required:

–          Ability to interact with children

–          Open minded, motivated and pro-active

–          Able to deliver own lessons and provide own materials such as art supplies if necessary

Period of Volunteering opportunity: Minimum one month

Age Range: 18 yrs and above.

Typical work/s for volunteer: The organisation is open to new ideas and volunteer work is based around individual skills, talents and interests. It can include but is not limited to the following:

–          Teaching informal or creative skills such as teamwork, sharing, time management, self awareness, and creative thinking. The organisation encourages lessons to be fun, engaging, and interactive.

–          Assist in formal education such as maths, reading and writing and computer skills.

–          Teaching creative or sports lessons such as painting, handicrafts, drama, soccer etc. The organisation is full of aspiring actors, artists, sports-stars, dancers, and singers! Activities in these areas offer children alternative ways of expressing themselves and are of great value to the organisation.

–          Assist in teaching vocational or life skills to the older children in preparation for entering the work force.

–          Spending time with the children in a nurturing way. For example, conduct beauty or manicure sessions with the girls.

–          Volunteers can also be involved in other organisation activities such as: event organising, research, fundraising and awareness and communication
