Ngerengere River Eco camp is a Tanzanian Environmentally responsible organization operating in Lukwambe village, near Morogoro. Most of the activities and projects take place near the Eco Camp, which is also the home of volunteers and Eco-Travellers. This organization is looking forward to making a big impact on the local communities while pursuing environmental responsibility.
How did the project begin?
Our Organization was founded in 2006 by Remiggius Mushenga in association with local volunteers and other organizations. Our first project was to successfully provide the local community with sustainable charcoal; their activities have broadened and expanded since then. Now we have become a successful model for sustainable development in a place with limited resources.
How can volunteers help?
Ngerengere River Eco camp is working in different projects in rural Tanzania, mainly in Morogoro and Pwani regions. With many other projects, we are managing a school that enrolls children coming from extreme poverty. We have environmental projects such as beekeeping, reforestation, and clean water infrastructure projects.
The organization is focused on three main areas:
- Environmental Sustainability
- Alternative Sources of Income
- Education
We provide volunteers with all essential needs in order to work efficiently. Volunteers are the backbone of our organization, they can join all of our projects and help with things like teaching at our Happy Bricks Primary School, planting trees, or help with our current construction projects. They can also choose from supporting our Water and Healthcare infrastructure projects.
We are in Bwawani village about 150km on the highway from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and 45km from Morogoro town on the same highway. At camp, we provide volunteers with rooms including shared bathrooms, tape water, and mosquito nets. We accept volunteers who stay a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of one year.
What makes you the most proud about your organization?
Our main accomplishment so far is the Happy Bricks Primary School, where we prepare and educate local children who come from marginalized areas of society. Most of them have successfully learned a lot of basic skills, such as reading and writing, which opens the doors for the sustainable development of the region and widens the opportunities for the children and their families.
For the whole time we worked with volunteers, we have proved positive results. For example, the number of children at school increased, and our first classes students pursue their national exams to join secondary schools. We are proud to say that we have improved the livelihood of our people.
