Tell Us About Your Organization

The long-term prosperity of Ibiza and Formentera depends on preserving our land, sea, and biodiversity. Natural resources are critical assets for our well-being and crucial for a sustainable and prosperous economy.

For a thriving natural environment and long-term economic and social prosperity, we need to address issues impacting the islands and the well-being of their residents. These include tourism, land use, water, waste, energy, biodiversity, and transport.

To better understand these issues, in 2018 we created the Sustainability Observatory. This data project studies the evolution of sustainability on the island from a socio-environmental perspective via various indicators. The work is carried out annually to track positive and negative trends, which helps inform and guide local decision-making about the island’s future development, in line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Who We Are

IbizaPreservation has identified, researched, and supported local initiatives that have positively impacted Ibiza and Formentera’s environment and community for over ten years. We believe the islands need to evolve so the tourism-based economy can co-exist harmoniously with our unique cultural and environmental heritage. We support this evolution by leading, funding, and enabling nature and biodiversity preservation projects on land and at sea.

What Makes You The Proudest About Your Organization?

IbizaPreservation was set up in 2008 by William Aitken, Serena Cook, and Ben Goldsmith. The friends established the foundation in response to unsustainable growth patterns on the island, driven mainly by mass tourism.

Since then, with the support of local businesses, residents, and lovers of Ibiza and Formentera, we have raised more than €2,000,000 in funds to preserve the islands.

Initially, IbizaPreservation was supported administratively by The Ecology Trust, an English grant-making charity established by the Goldsmith family. To grow stronger roots on the island, we became a legally independent Spanish entity in 2015 – ‘Fundación para la Conservación de Ibiza y Formentera’.

By helping preserve the islands’ natural resources, such as water, landscapes, and the marine environment, we want to contribute to local well-being and prosperity.
